Itaiópolis - Santa Catarina
Located on the northern plateau of Santa Catarina, distant 140 km from Curitiba and 159 km from Joinville, Itaiópolis is known as the “Polish Cultural Capital of Santa Catarina". It is a century-old city with roots in the historic tropeiro (muleteer) route that once connected southeastern Brazil to the south. Over the years, Itaiópolis has been shaped by the influence of various ethnic groups, including Poles, Ukrainians, Germans, Indigenous peoples, and caboclos, all of whom have left their mark on the local culture and architecture.
Today, this rich cultural heritage is preserved by associations founded by the descendants of Slavic immigrants, who keep their ancestral traditions alive through cuisine, traditional attire, and events that offer an immersive experience into the region’s authentic cultural diversity. Itaiópolis combines the charm of a quiet town with the convenience of easy access, situated just over a two-hour drive from major urban centers like Curitiba.
Beyond its cultural and architectural heritage — notably in the Alto Paraguaçu neighborhood, where ITAICINE takes place — Itaiópolis boasts a stunning natural landscape. The convergence of the plateau and the Upper Itajaí Valley creates a setting defined by crystal-clear waterfalls, winding rivers, and impressive mountain ranges. The approximately 900 hectares protected across nine Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) offer a spectacular experience, inviting visitors to explore the region’s still-pristine natural environment.
